Forged for the Backcountry: Redesigning the Perfect Boxers for the Backcountry

As a seasoned backcountry hunter, I've long struggled to find the perfect base layer system that can withstand the rigors of multi-day hunts. From boxers that lose their shape to tops that fail to wick moisture, the search for durable, high-performance apparel has been an ongoing challenge. That is, until now.

Introducing the Forged Base Series - a complete redesign of hunting base layers, built from the ground up to deliver unparalleled comfort, durability, and function in the field. This isn't just another iteration of an existing product; it's a true game-changer, born from my own frustrations and a relentless pursuit of perfection.

The Driving Force Behind the Forged Base Series

For years, I've been on a quest to find the ideal base layer system - one that could truly stand up to the demands of backcountry hunting. I've tested countless options, from premium merino wool to synthetic blends, only to be left disappointed time and time again.

The breaking point came when a manufacturer I had previously praised changed the fabric of their boxers, causing them to fall apart within weeks. That's when I realized the only way to get the performance I needed was to take matters into my own hands and design it myself.

The driving force behind the Forged Base Series was the belief that strength in the foundation equals performance in the field. If I couldn't find someone else willing or able to make the apparel I craved, I would have to do it myself. And so, the journey to create the ultimate hunting base layer system began.

The Design Process: Feel, Fit, and Function

When it came to designing the Forged Base Series, I approached it with a simple, yet comprehensive framework: feel, fit, and function. Each element was meticulously considered, tested, and refined to ensure the end product would exceed the demands of the backcountry.

Feel: Fabric Perfection

The first step in the design process was nailing the feel of the fabric. As someone who has done consulting work for major apparel brands, I understood the importance of starting with the right materials. After extensive research and testing, I landed on a premium blend of modal and spandex.

  • Modal: A natural, bio-based fabric derived from the pulp of beech trees. It's incredibly soft, breathable, and efficient at wicking moisture - perfect for a base layer.
  • Spandex: The addition of this synthetic fiber provides the perfect amount of stretch and shape retention, ensuring a secure, comfortable fit that won't lose its form over time.

The combination of these two fabrics creates a base layer that feels luxuriously soft against the skin, while also delivering the performance characteristics needed for the backcountry. It's antimicrobial, durable, and resistant to pilling and shrinkage - even after repeated washings and abuse.

Fit: Dialing in the Details

With the fabric selection dialed in, the next step was ensuring the perfect fit. This was a critical component, as a poorly fitting base layer can quickly become a source of frustration and discomfort in the field.

After extensive testing, I landed on a mid-thigh length design for the boxers, with a slightly tighter fit around the quad area. This helps prevent the dreaded "bunching" and chafing that can occur when the hem rides up. The waistband was also a key focus, designed to be wide enough to be supportive, yet thin enough to avoid stacking issues under a backpack hip belt.

But the real secret to the fit lies in the stretch. By blending modal and spandex, I was able to create a base layer that moves with you, rather than against you. It stretches to accommodate your movements, then snaps back into place, maintaining a secure, comfortable fit throughout the hunt.

Function: Built for the Backcountry

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the Forged Base Series had to deliver uncompromising performance in the field. This meant addressing common pain points that plague many base layer systems, and engineering solutions that would stand the test of time and abuse.

One of the key functional features is the top-access fly design. Rather than a traditional side fly, I opted for a discreet, easy-to-access opening at the top. This allows you to relieve yourself without having to remove your backpack or completely readjust your clothing - a game-changer when nature calls in the backcountry.

To combat the issue of base layers falling apart after just a few days of use, I put the Forged Base Series through an extensive durability testing regimen. I literally wore the same pair of boxers for 10 straight days, putting them through the wringer of sweat, movement, and abuse. The result? A base layer that maintains its shape, fit, and function, even after prolonged use in the field.

But the attention to detail doesn't stop there. Strategic mesh panels in high-heat zones, like the crotch and inner thighs, help to improve breathability and prevent chafing. And the thoughtfully designed pouch provides just the right amount of support, without the uncomfortable "cinching" that can occur with some other brands.

Expanding the Forged Base Series

The launch of the Forged Base Series boxers was just the beginning. I'm excited to announce the expansion of this innovative line with the introduction of the Forged Base Hunting Hat.

Like the boxers, the Forged Base Hunting Hat was designed with the backcountry hunter in mind. It's a completely waterproof, one-size-fits-most Snapback cap, featuring a custom camo pattern that I worked closely with an artist to develop. The waterproof construction means it sheds moisture and sweat, while the breathable design ensures your head stays cool and comfortable, even on the most grueling hunts.

I've been putting this hat through the wringer for the past few months, and I can attest to its durability and performance. Whether it's a rainy spring bear hunt or a winter goat expedition, this hat has proven itself time and time again. And the best part? When it gets soaked with sweat, all you have to do is throw a toque on top of it for an hour, and it's good as new.
